Roots and Shoots
Jane Goodall went to Africa to study animals. She spent 40 years observing and studying chimpanzees in Tanzania. As a result of Dr. Goodall’s work, an organization called Roots and Shoots was formed. This organization focuses on enthusiasm of children and teenagers who wants to help the local and global community. The idea began in 1991. A group of 16 teenagers met Dr. Goodall at her home in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. They wanted to discuss how to help with a variety of problems, such as pollution, tree‐cutting, the treatment of animals, and the future of wildlife. Dr. Goodall was involved in the meetings, but the teenagers chose the service project and did the work themselves. The first Roots and Shoots community project was a local one. The group taught villagers how better to treat chickens at home and in the marketplace. Today, there are tens of thousands of members in almost 100 countries. They work to make their environment and the world a better place through community‐service projects.
