Crossing the Equator
Three years ago, John took a trip around the world by ship. Of course, he saw many unusual things during his trip, which lasted for six months. But the experience that he had when the ship crossed the equator was the strangest experience for him.
The ship had been in the tropics for several days, and everyone had been very quiet because of the heat: the temperature had not been under 85° Fahrenheit for two days. John had gone to his room to rest during the afternoon.
Unexpectedly, two workers on the ship came to his room and asked him if he had crossed the equator before. When John said that he hadn’t ever crossed the equator, they made him come with them, saying that they were going to celebrate an important event. When they arrived at the place on the ship where the other passengers and crew were waiting, John was surprised to be hit with lots and lots of sea water. Everyone was laughing, and they told him that this was a typical “celebration” for people crossing the equator for the first time.
