Travelling in India
Once, when Nick was a young man, he was travelling in the north‐west of India. One evening, after hunting in the forest all day, he was returning alone to the place where he had put up his tent. It was getting dark, and he was walking along a narrow path. On his right was a wide river; on his left, a thick, dark forest. Suddenly Nick saw two green eyes looking at him from among the trees. A man‐eating tiger was getting ready to jump on him.
The young man decided to jump into the river. He hoped to save his life by swimming. He looked to the right. In the river there was a giant crocodile waiting to welcome him with its mouth wide open.
Nick was so frightened that he shut his eyes. He heard branches moving as the tiger jumped. The young man opened his eyes. The tiger had jumped right over him and was in the jaws of the crocodile.
