He did not laugh
Mark Twain was well known as a lecturer, and literary clubs often invited him to speak. Before one of his lectures a club member came up to him and said:
“People say that you can tell very funny stories. I hope you will tell a story that will make my uncle laugh. He has not laughed for ten years.”
“I do my best.” Mark Twain said.
Mark Twain told every joke in his memory: long and short, new and old ones. Everybody was laughing but not the old man. He continued to look at Mark Twain with his cold, blue eyes. Mark Twain was ashamed to think that he couldn’t make him laugh, and he tried again and again. But nothing helped ….
After the lecture, the club member came to Mark Twain and said.
